Remarks on "Cut Throat," Illustrated by a Case

I was called one day to see a Sergeant of the 2nd Queen's Eoyals, who had cut his throat with a razor. As we were in i camp, and hia tent within a few paces of mine, little time elapsed before I had secured three small arteries (superior Thyroid) and some veins. I then had time to survey the extent of the damage. There was a clear cut through the thyro-hyoid space, five inches in length, and extending down to the bodies of the cervical vertebra. The wound gaping to such an extent, that the clenched fist could easily have lain in it. Happily a narrow strip of the posterior wall of the pharynx was left, towards the left centre of the spine, which alone prevented the subsidence of the food passage still further down the neck with the larynx.
